December 12, 2025
Beginning on July 1, 2025, newly elected or appointed public officials who are members of governmental bodies are required to complete a training course regarding the Open Meetings and Open Records law within 90 days of taking office. A governmental body includes city councils, boards of supervisors, school boards, municipal utility boards, planning and zoning commissions, library boards, boards of adjustment, civil service commissions, and any other body subject to the Iowa open meetings law. The training course must be not less than one hour and not more than two hours long. Although this requirement only applies to newly elected or appointed public officials, the training is open to all public officials.
Ahlers & Cooney has been approved by the Iowa Public Information Board to provide this required training. The first training session will be conducted via live webinar on Friday, October 3, 2025 from 12-1:30 pm.
At this time, Ahlers & Cooney plans to offer periodic pre-scheduled live webinars. Live, in-person or virtual training sessions can be scheduled upon request.
