Background

Carrie is a member of the firm’s Education Law Practice Area, serving K-12 school districts and Area Education Agencies, with an emphasis in special education. She currently leads the firm's Student Issues Practice Group and has chaired the firm's Charitable Actions Committee. Carrie has a strong passion for working with educational institutions, as prior to law school, she was a public elementary education teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools and Minneapolis Public Schools, and spent one year teaching in Brussels, Belgium.

Carrie works on a variety of issues, including those related to accessibility, accommodations, student programming, student discipline and procedural rights, as well as those arising under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Carrie’s practice also includes drafting and negotiating contracts, policies, and procedures to assist her clients with maintaining legal compliance in their day-to-day operations. She is also a member of the firm’s Employment Law and Litigation Practice Groups, working on issues for K-12 school districts.

Prior to joining Ahlers & Cooney, Carrie served as a Law Clerk to The Honorable Robert Pratt, Senior Judge, United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa from 2014-2016, and The Honorable Natalie Hudson, Minnesota Court of Appeals from 2013-2014. While in law school, Carrie was Assistant Editor of the W. Mitchell Law Review.
