H. Richard SmithH. Richard Smith was born in Moravia, Iowa. He received a B.S. from Simpson College in 1953 and a J.D. from Drake University in 1958. While at Drake, he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Delta Theta Phi.

He is past Chair of the Firm's General Litigation department and Of Counsel to the Firm. He was president of the Iowa Bar Association in 1987-1988 and of the Polk County Bar Association in 1980-1981 and is a member of the American Bar Association.

His other legal activities include: Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers, State Chair, 1993-94; Fellow, American Bar Foundation; Chair, Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure, 1981-85; Co-Chair, Federal District Court Advisory Committee, 1989-1995; Member, 8th Circuit Judicial Conference Advisory Committee, 1990-93; Chair, Litigation Section, Iowa State Bar, 1990-92; Member, Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Iowa Defense Counsel Association. He is a member of the Board of Trustees, Simpson College, 1974-.
