Douglas R. SmithDouglas R. Smith was born in Syracuse, New York. He received a B.S. degree with distinction in Economics from Iowa State University in 1968 and his J.D. from the University of Iowa with high distinction in 1970. He was a member of the Order of the Coif and Board of Editors of the Iowa Law Review.

He was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1970 and the Colorado Bar in 1989. He is a member of the Firm's Business Law department and Of Counsel to the Firm. He was International Corporate Counsel and Corporate Counsel with Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. from 1991-2000. For 8 of those years he served as General Counsel of Pioneer Overseas Corporation, in Brussels, Belgium with responsibility for a six member legal team handling the international legal issues of Pioneer Hi-Bred in Europe, Asia and Africa.

He was in private practice in Des Moines, Iowa from 1971-1990. He teaches an interim course in International Business Transaction at the University of Iowa Law School and has taught Federal Income Taxation at the Drake University Law School. He was an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, Legislation and Regulations Division, Chief Counsel's Office, Washington, D.C. prior to active duty in the US Army AG Corps in 1970.

Other activities have included: Director, Southeast Polk School Board; Director, Farmers Savings Bank, Mitchellville, Iowa; Polk County representative to Des Moines River Recreation Area Green Belt Advisory Committee; National Council of Farmers Cooperatives (Attorney Member); Adjunct Member, Iowa Institute of Cooperation; Co-author of "Legal Assistance for the Rural Poor: an Iowa Study," 56 Iowa Law Review 100 (1970). He is a member of the Iowa Bar Association.
